What Is eFoiling?

eFoiling is the experience of flying above water on a board powered by a quiet electric motor and hydrofoil wing. It’s a blend of surfing, snowboarding, and sailing — but without the noise, wake, or reliance on wind or waves. Riders glide effortlessly across the surface, controlled by body movement and a handheld wireless controller.

The History of eFoils

The concept of the electric hydrofoil began as early as 2008, when students at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology built the first experimental electric foiling board as part of a research project in naval architecture.

Nearly a decade later, in 2016, David Trewern — a lifelong surfer and innovator from Byron Bay, Australia — developed the first prototype that would become Fliteboard. With advances in lightweight batteries and brushless motors, the dream of a stable, powerful, stand-up electric hydrofoil became reality.

By 2018, Fliteboard began delivering production models, quickly earning global recognition for innovation, design, and performance. Over the years, the brand has continued to push boundaries — introducing industry-first features like Flite App connectivity, Flitecell Titanium batteries, Dual Drive propulsion, and True Glide freewheeling propellers — making Fliteboard the most awarded and refined eFoil in the world.

Today, Cape Fear eFoil brings that same award-winning technology and spirit of innovation to the Cape Fear region, offering local riders the opportunity to experience flight over water through lessons, sales, and certified service.
